Background of the Study
The explosion of short-form video content on platforms such as TikTok has given rise to a new dimension of linguistic expression—audio-based communication. In Nigeria, TikTok video clips serve as a medium where phonetic variations become prominent, revealing diverse accents and intonation patterns across different communities (Ogundele, 2023). This study examines how Nigerian users employ distinctive phonetic features in TikTok videos, reflecting both regional linguistic diversity and contemporary digital trends. The platform’s emphasis on audio-visual content provides an innovative space for the exploration of phonetic creativity and adaptation. As users experiment with various vocal styles and sound effects, new phonetic phenomena emerge that may influence everyday speech patterns (Akinyemi, 2024). Despite the significant role of TikTok in disseminating these phonetic variations, systematic research in this area remains sparse. This investigation seeks to understand the extent to which TikTok contributes to the evolution of Nigerian phonetics and how these digital expressions mirror broader sociolinguistic trends in the country (Umar, 2023). By analyzing audio clips from diverse TikTok creators, the study aims to document the interplay between digital media and spoken language, offering insights into the future trajectory of phonetic innovation.
Statement of the Problem
There is a notable gap in research regarding the influence of TikTok on Nigerian phonetic variation. While the platform is widely used and has a significant cultural impact, little is known about how its audio content shapes and disseminates phonetic features among Nigerian users. This gap in empirical evidence hampers our understanding of the interplay between digital media and traditional speech patterns. The study aims to address this shortfall by analyzing the phonetic characteristics present in TikTok videos and exploring their broader sociolinguistic implications. Without such research, language evolution in digital spaces may remain misunderstood, limiting the capacity of linguists and media analysts to capture emerging trends (Babatunde, 2024).
